Despite what the cats may think, I am not really an engineer. But I’ve kept the systems running on Momo for over 25 years. My former partner and I purposely chose sailing as a way to escape Western consumerism and explore other parts of the world while raising a family. Since the beginning of COVID, I’ve been based in Sea of Cortez, which over time has become a home. As for the cats, Medea and Hera are sisters. I picked them up from a cat-rescue woman in the Kentucky Fried Chicken parking lot in Guaymas. Chispa joined more recently, having been rescued as a tiny, hungry, flea-ridden kitten by a friend in Merida and smuggled all the way across Mexico by bus to join the boat. Despite ecological pressures, the Sea of Cortez is the most pristine natural environment I’ve ever seen. Protected from human encroachment by its desert climate, the Sea thrums with wildlife, and it has provided our tiny, floating dwelling with the most incredible backyard on the margins of capitalism. We’re grateful the winds and currents have brought us here.
